The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) is a criterion-referenced skills assessment tool, tracking system, and curriculum guide. AFLS is used for teaching children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities the essential skills they need in order to achieve the most independent outcomes. AFLS is the most versatile assessment system available and offers learners a pathway to independence. Functional skills are everywhere – they are present all day and exist in every setting. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or other developmental disabilities may experience success in developing these skills in some areas and difficulty in other areas.
Key Features
- Dynamic pathway for lifelong learning, regardless of where any learner is currently functioning.
- Includes six interchangeable assessment protocols and a companion AFLS Guide.
- Provides a continuum of over 1,900 skills across 66 areas.
- Empowers users by creating a pathway for developing functional living skills.
- Based on years of published research and collective observations.
Additional Information
The need for developing a comprehensive program that provides a pathway to navigate successful teaching and learning. Without special training or tools professionals, educators, parents, and caregivers are often looking for systems and programs that will enhance their ability to provide their learners success as they move closer to independent living environments. The authors and developers recognized the need for autism resources, developing Functional Living Skills (FLS) systems to be practical and easy-to-understand methods of assessing and teaching independent skills.
Although each assessment protocol can be used as a standalone assessment, the authors conceptualize all protocols as being different modules of an extended assessment that exists on a continuum spanning throughout a learner’s life in home, school, and community settings. Each module is different yet each is connected by unifying themes and overarching goals for maximizing a learner’s freedom, independence, and opportunities. Bundle multiple modules and customize the perfect assessment for your setting and situation.
About the Authors of the AFLS
Dr. Michael Mueller and Dr. James Partington have dedicated their careers to supporting individuals with autism and/or other developmental disabilities by working with other professionals, educators, parents, and caregivers in a variety of settings. Through their research and expertise in the science of applied behaviour analysis, they launched the FLS pathway through the development of the AFLS assessment system for learners of all ages.
