Iodosorb ointment is a sterile, brown, slightly grainy paste containing cadexomer iodine, designed for wet wounds like leg ulcers and pressure sores. It works by absorbing fluid, debris, and pus, forming a gel, and releasing iodine to kill bacteria, promoting a clean, moist healing environment. Its colour changes from brown to yellow to indicate when it is time for a dressing change.
Key Features & How It Works
- Composition: A sterile mixture of cadexomer iodine, starch micro-beads loaded with iodine, and an ointment base.
- Absorption: Rapidly absorbs wound exudate, fluid, pus, and debris, creating a moist environment.
- Antimicrobial action: As it absorbs fluid, the micro-beads swell and release iodine, providing sustained, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, including against MRSA, for up to 72 hours.
- Debridement: Helps to slough off dead tissue and debris, aiding natural wound cleaning.
- Colour change: Changes from dark brown to pale yellow or white as it absorbs fluid and releases iodine, signalling when to change the dressing.
- Gel formation: Forms a protective gel over the wound, helping prevent dressings from sticking and reducing pain on removal.
