Soft Mattress Overlay

The Soft Mattress Overlay is designed to help prevent pressure care issues developing with low to moderate risk patients to a maximum weight of 100kgs, and to be comfortable to sleep on. The cover is made from the same moisture-wicking material used in some sports clothing, featuring four-way stretch, making it superior for pressure care compared to cotton fabric.

Additional Information

The Overlay has ten individual channels that are filled with Hollow-Core Polyester Fibre, which is the same fibre used in Pelican’s Soft Positioning Cushions. This filling has many benefits, including being softer and normally cooler next to the body compared to foam. It is possible to take out some of the fibre from one channel via the zip opening running the length of one side of the Overlay, to add to another channel for particular pressure care. An example of this would be if a patient needed more support under their lower back area; some fibre can be taken out of the other channels and transferred to the appropriate channels to give them more back support. Separate 2kg bags of Hollow-Core Polyester Fibre are available if extra filling is required.

Cleaning

Hand or machine wash up to 80°C (176°F). Chlorine and bleach can damage the filling and covers. Usually, people purchase a Top Sheet to attach to the Overlay and remove it for washing. If the Hollow-Core Polyester Fibre needs washing, then the complete product with the filling inside can be washed as above. The complete Overlay may not fit in a domestic washing machine; however, it can be washed by hand in a large laundry sink or bath, and most Laundromats have large washing machines that may be suitable. Hand-squeeze excess water out and air dry in the shade. Tumble drying can only be done on a cool setting, and the inside of the drum must be cold before putting the Overlay into the dryer. Ensure that all parts of the product are completely dry before using or storing. Open the zip and place a hand inside to make sure the filling is dry.

Important

This product is to help with the prevention of pressure sores. Sometimes, due to the patient deteriorating, the product may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended. Consult your Therapist before using. Warning: Even with good pressure care mattresses, it is still necessary to turn patients. If a patient is left on their back for too long, their internal organs can drop due to gravity. A patient lying on the Soft Mattress Overlay may be more difficult to turn compared to a patient on a firmer foam mattress. In this situation, we recommend using a Slide & Turn Sheet for lightweight patients, or a Slide & Turn Hoist Sheet for heavier patients, to assist with the heavy manual handling when turning.
